Tiscali Broadband connection

I have Tiscali broadband and connected about a month ago. I had problems connecting and phoned up and the really helpful people (not) told me it was because I had an extension lead - the error message kept on popping up saying that there wasn't enough USB bandwidth for the modem but despite unplugging all other USB connections this did not resolve the matter. I eventually got the connection working but I don't know how (I originally had the filter pluged into the main BT socket when in actual fact it should have been in the extension socket). Anyway the problem now is I have been asked to sort my friends connection as she is having exactly the same problem. However I cannot remember what on earth I did to fix it and it is driving me insane - plus she has just given me a bottle of wine to thank me for my troubles when I haven't even fixed it! The only difference between our two set ups is that her main phone line is not plugged straight into her BT box - it seems to be via another cable. When I asked where her BT box was she seemed to think it was under the floorboards?! The USB bandwidth pop up keeps on happening yet she doesn't have any other USB connections. I have the green ADSL light flashing and the other Power one on - have tried restarting the computer and leaving it for 30 secs as it recommends but no luck. Please help as I am about to go mad!

from 1 nick 2 another;the way i did it was:

u need a microfilter in every room u have a phone or computer. Do not plug it straight into the main bt box unless that is where your computer is. if not then plug filter into exten lead, plug lead into main bt box.if u have plugged in a multiple line adapter, still have the exten plugged into that and not going thro a second microfilter. you can plug your phone into the same filter only if it is in the same room as your computer. if not then it needs its own filter & line,

i don't no if any of this helps, god only no's if even he could understand. & by the time i submit this u will prob have a simple answer & have sorted it hours ago.

Normal telephone extension leads are not powerful enough to carry a broadband signal,you should put in an extension using proper tele cable,it will be ok then.

Thank you! I haven't managed to get round to my friends yet as have been away but will try this when I do get round there. I also emailed Tiscali Customer Services and they said that if the USB bandwidth pop up is happening then it is a problem with the modem and they will need to send a replacement. Not entirely convinced this is the case as I had the same pop up and managed to get mine working! Wish me luck!!
