which version of outlook are you using? Normally such a thing would depend on what format you are using (HTML, word, outlook richtext or plain text).

I am using HTML in Outlook 2003. It is outgoing messages (new and replies) that automatically come up in WEBLAYOUT view instead of NORMAL.view. I know I can change the view each time but I want it to open that way otherwise the text is far too wide.

ok, here's what to do.

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Mail Format tab.
untick microsoft Word as your e-mail editor. You should now be using a standard HTML window...

Thanks for your efforts b0shb4II but this does not solve my problem. NEW & REPLY messages are still viewed in WEBLAYOUT by default. I want the text to wrap around after about 35 characters but in this format they go right across the page. As I have said I can correct it by selecting VIEW then NORMAL LAYOUT but I have to do this every time I open a new message. When I open up the VIEW menu on a NEW message, I get three options NORMAL, PRINT LAYOUT and WEBLAYOUT. WEBLAYOT has a box around it signifying this is the one in currents use. I then have to click on the NORMAL box to revert it.

ok mate, think I can help this time...(fingers crossed)

If the word bit didn't work, here is how you set up the word wrap around.

Click view, arrange by, then custom. Click other settings. At the bottom there is a tick box for 'use multi-line mayout in widths smaller than ___ characters. Set to what ever you like but try around 100...

Sorry to be a pain but that is already set to 100. I tried as few as 30 but it doesn't help. I think the problem is a more simple one and everything is fine if I switch to NORMAL layout. It is just defaulting to that which is proving difficult. I really am grateful for your interest b0shb4II (where did you get that user name from by the way?)

I use outlook 2003 every day but have been unable to recreate your problem. What happens when you set the default format to plain text?

No worries mate, I work in the arena of computing so it's no hassle to help out a bit.

As for my username, I have no idea where I got it from. Just popped in to my head while on a drunken forum visit...

Thanks b0shb4II. I think I am on the wrong tack completely. Can I start again please?....On my office computer when I type an email message it wraps the text around after about 70 characters which makes a neat and readable message. Here at home on my laptop it does not wrap around until about 120 characters which makes a very wide document (although it prints to A4 ok). If I press return to cut this down it then capitalises the first letter of the next word (which is now on the next line). I use Word as my email editor for all documents and both machines are on xp and word 2003. Thanks in anticipation.
