I tried what you advised me to do, when I opened the SYSTEM.INI file in notepad, the pcaynwhere file was nowhere to be seen. I have no idea whats wrong with the bloody thing, but I think my father-in-law is going to get someone in to look at it.

hi emma--this is all very odd since the original error message specifically said the pcanywhere file was referenced to in the system.ini file--probably best then if ur father-in-law gets someone on the spot to look at it--wish i could cos this is the sort of mystery i thrive on--there are many other things i would start to look at if i were on site but would be time consuming to start on them here--best if someone can look at it on-site--having said that one quick thing u can try is go to control panel and choose add/remove software--see if pcanywhere is in the list--if so then highlight it and click on remove--if not then no harm done--the problem u have often arises when someone deletes a progam by just dumping its folder in the recycle bin--this leaves remnants which can cause problems--editing the registry as we mentiond is another option as is re-installing windows which would produce a new registry and system.ini file--let me know how things go--i'm intrigued-- ajmmac AT gmail.com --arthur

Did you also check the registry key I mentioned?

For the record, it didn't actually state the loading point was the system.ini file, it's just this was the most likely place to find it. I reckon it's in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
