I bought a used ipod (U2 color) with a lot of songs on it . I would like to save the songs on my computer, but when I plug the ipod into my laptop, it says it doesn't recognize this ipod and asks if I want to reformat it. Won't this erase all my music?

Reformatting it will remove the songs. It sounds strange that it doesn't pop up as a new harddrive when you plug it in. MP3's are stored on the iPod as numbered files, so you can't just copy/paste the mp3s as they would all need to be renamed! Try something like
