This is perfectly true.

The first remote control units were plugged in to the tv on a long lead.

Here's the proof

even I knew that, do keep up.

My family's 1st video when I was growing up was a top loader with a wired remote control back in 1980 !

When some mates of mine got a flat together when they were about 17 they had a wooden remote control that looked remarkably like a pool cue !

My first VHS was a top-loader with a cable remote - we thought it was dead sophisticated!
...and how often I had to replace the cords because somebody had tripped over it and broken it! A fair number of the early vcrs had wired remotes. I don't think there was ever a wired remote for a tv marketed in the UK - at least on a mass scale - but the early ones, in the mid seventies, were ultra-sonic and they really used to upset people's cats.
Yep, one of the first videos we had used a remote with a cable too.
And we had a telly with a sonic remote control which changed channels if you sneezed!
My friend's parents had a sonic remote that changed channel just by making a loud click - unfortunately, they also had a parrot who soon learned to imitate it!
