wireless laptop

Hi at the moment i am useing a dongle(think thats what its called) via my usb for my wireless connection on my laptop. But i keep looseing my connection after 5 mins as i think the dongle is broken. My friend told me to buy a card that slots into my laptop to use my wireless. So another friend lent me his to try but when i put it in it freezes my laptop. Dose anyone have any idea why this happens Thanks
