I made some reel to reel recordings of my daughter when she was a baby in the early 1960's.

Is there any way I can transfer the recordings onto modern day cassette tapes?

I don't have the original equipment.

Thanks to everyone who answered all my previous questions.

Check your Yellow Pages for local recording studios, and ring round, they can do it for you, just depends how much they want for doing it - so be willing to haggle a bit.

Failing that, stick a note on wherever you can put a free note - library, newsagents, where ever, and ask if anyone can assist.

Put it on CD, ironically modern day cassette might be a step down in quality.

you'll need to get hold of a quarter inch reel to reel tape recorder. Ebay have loads. Since you don't have the original unit the tapes were recorded on, i would look for the most versatile one with at least the following characteristics, to hopefully cope with nearly anything you throw at it:

-3 tape speeds: 1 7/8, 3 3/4 and 7 1/2 i.p.s. were the common domestic standards.

-4 tracks. look for a switch marked 'track selector' or 1-4, 3-2 .

-Phono sockets or a headphone jack to enable you to connect it to a hi fi sytem's or PC's line input for copying.

finally, how big are your spools (in diameter)? you may need a player which will take up to 7 inch reels, many machines only took up to 5 3/4 inches.

you should be able to pick up a working mono machine with the above features for well under 50 notes. I think something like a Tandberg series 15 (4 track model !) would be perfect, as it has all the above.

hope this helps! let us know how you get on.
