What do you mean by standalone player?

Ripping to what? mp3? Tape!!? iPod?

Connect the standalone player to a computer through the sound card and use the free program Audacity.

Do you have a DVD 'player' on your computer? Life would be sooooo much easier?

Sorry, I was thinking of standalone DVD players (that's what they usually are). Do you mean from a CD player? A portable perhaps?

Still easier on the computer but there is a product called the iMic which takes an analogue input to you iPod.
