unknown file format??

why, when I save an image from the net as a gif or bitmat, when i try to open it, an error message says the file is an unknown format and can't open it and the file is named as a jpeg??

Try this: right-click on the icon for the picture file once you've downloaded it, move the mouse to "Open with", and click "Choose program" from the submenu. In the list of programs, choose "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer", and tick the box that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file". Then Click OK.
