If so you will need to get into its settings (there's usually a web interface which you can access by typing the router's IP address into the address bar in Internet Explorer - often 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.2.1) and finding the firewall settings. In my Belkin router, for example, the setting is under 'Virtual Servers'. You will need to open up the ports for the computer you're trying to use Messenger with.
If your router doesn't allow you to refer to your computer by name, you may need to find out your PC's IP address within the internal network... to do this go to Start > Run, type "cmd" (no quotes) and press enter. in the command window, type "ipconfig" (again no quotes) and press enter. Make a note of the number next to 'IP Address'.
If you're not connecting via a router, it may be you personal firewall that's the problem. Have a look through its settings for a way to open up the ports it needs.
