I use a turntable deck with a built in RIAA compensator (otherwise the vinyl sounds dodgy) and plug that straight into my computer's soundcard 'line-in' socket. I then use Audacity (it's free!!) from www.audacity.soundforge.net to convert to mp3. You will also need a lame dll available from many download sites. (just Google: Lame dll) Audacity uses this to create the mp3s so it is vital. The advantage of using Audacity is that you can watch the waveform of the music and adjust the bass etc if the vinyl read was a bit short in that area (it often is on old pressings).

I've done hundreds this way and although it is time consuming the results are well worthwhile.

PS If you haven't got a RIAA compensating deck but DO have an output from your vinyl amp this will have already have the RIAA built in and works fine.

Cheers JSB, great news!

You could also try the ADS Tech Instant Music software package, records your vinyl, cassets, etc to mp3, WAV and AAC. Its available from QVC.co.uk, item Nos 553108, look under computing/software and it retails for 32.72p
