although there are plenty of switching sites does any site actually give a tariffs charged comparison table of utility companies , they do it for ISPs but i cant find a the same for gas/elec suppliers

Try http://utilities.moneysupermarket.com/calc_moneysupermarket.html?db=dual as the comparisons literally change street by street according to postcode, so to find the best in your area - there is no point finding a cheap supplier in Somerset if you live in Norfolk - fill in the boxes and see the options. Dual fuel rates are a bit cheaper.

If you are an eco-bunny, look for eco friendly suppliers as well.
