If I remember right - and it has been a long time - it WILL erase everything. It may have just a "repair" function but I really can't recall.

Oddly enough, I had the opposite with XP - I wanted it to overwrite everything so I installed a clean copy, and it just wouldn't do it.

Whatever you do, back it up. It'll be worth it at some point.

It was common practice to reinstall windows 98 over top of the existing win98 operating system if anything went wrong. Re-installing Win98 replaced missing files and in most cases repaired damaged or corrupted files. Re-installing Win98 never, in my experience, destroyed or corrupted any other data on the computer's hard drive however, it is recommended that all data on the hard drive be backed up before one meddles with the operating system, "just in case".
