Re-installing Win98 replaced missing files and in most cases repaired damaged or corrupted files. Re-installing Win98 never, in my experience, destroyed or corrupted any other data on the computer's hard drive however, it is recommended that all data on the hard drive be backed up before one meddles with the operating system, "just in case".
