In answer to xyzzyplugh's question. Suppose you work at a company that restricts what sites you look at. So if you try to access - for instance - www.playboy.com - it doesn't allow it, well, find out the ip address and use that instead. :)
wrt. Pinotage : one should note that with much web hosting occurring on servers such as the Cobalt RaQ, a single IP address could apply to several hundred individual websites - accessing the IP address rather than the domain name will most likely send you to their host's site.
