Changing id name on computer

I have purchased a used computer from a relative.His name still apears on most programmes /documents and settings. While this is no great problem, is there an easy way to put ny own identity on the computer without causing any problems

From the control panel add yourself as another user, give yourseld admin status then delete the other guy?
