Distorted security codes

Occasionally on ebay or other secure sites, you are asked to key in a code shown on the screen as jumble of letters or numbers. Anyone know what purpose this distortion serves?

I always understood that it was to ensure that there was a live person at the other end, rather than some automated scripting programme or similar
