I want to get a better deal on my phone so, is it possible to transfer my existing number to another network? any advice gratefully received.

The short answer is yes. You can call yor existing mobile phone provider pay-as-you-go or contract and request a Port Authority Code, PAC code. This code is then given to the new network and you number transfer can begin.
Your existing provider is obliged to supply your PAC within 48 working hours from your request, this is specified in OFFCOM/OFFTEL/OTELO regulations on Mobile Number Portability, MNP.
In some cases you can even move to a new service provider on the same network, this relates to Vodafone and O2 contract customers only this is know as a migration.
Another thing to consider is what sort of coverage will youget on your new network. It is good to know that Virgin uses T-Mobile signal. BT Mobile use Vodafone signal now, Fresh (from carphone warehouse) uses T Mobile and 3, three, uses O2 signal when you cannot get a 3 signal.
Some networks require that the PAC code is given at point of connection, (Vodafone), others require it is given within a specific time, (O2 and BT Mobile both 14 days) and others will allow you to port at any time, (Orangte, T-Mobile, 3)

To obtain your PAC call Vodafone 191 from your current handset and request this PAC code. There should be no charge as long as you are outside of any contract. (How long have you been with Vodafone? When did you last upgrade or commit to staying with them for another 12 months if ever)
You can either sign up with T Mobile before or after receiveing the PAC. If you sign up with T-Mobile before receiving PAC you just need to call T-Mobile on 150 once you recieve the PAC. If you want to wait, then once you have recieved the PAC you give the PAC to the person you speak to when you go to be credit checked and sign up for you new phone.
HOWEVER, please beaware that T-Mobile do not offer 14 day returns on their contract phones as standard anymore, it actually depends on the retail outlet where you purchase your phone from. Carphone Warehouse will allow you to completely return the product if the phone is faulty. If it is not faulty then they will allow you to swap handsets once, but not network. Phones 4U on the other hand still offer full 14 day returns on T-Mobile products. Not sure about anywhere else.
This should not affect your rights under Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000 that give you 7 days from reciept of the product to reject the goods. This applie if bought from Internet or over phone.
