It may be due to advice handed down through the generations (my grandmother told me she used to put porridge in my bottle!!!) in the 60's & 70's it was quite common practice to thicken formula. In Sweden they have a special 'night time' formula which is thicker..you can even get a special teat to allow the thicker mixture to get through.
Of course this isn't advised in our country!
My son is 10 months old and i still sterilise about 90% of his bottles. I have been told that i could stop at 6 months but ive chosen to gradually wean him off sterile stuff to avoid a sudden exposure to too many bugs.
I cant believe that someone would not wash a bottle before sterilising, thats disgusting.
As for adding extra scoops to a bottle, why? If baby wants more food give more liquid.
I have been told in past to give extra 0.5oz of liquid in a bottle but this was in height of summer and to stop my baby's constipation when he was a week old. It worked but i only did it for couple of days until back to normal.
I can remember my Mum trying to add more formula to my sons bottle (he is now 14) she wanted to double the scoops, never mind just adding one more scoop. I had many arguements with her over it but I know she still did it even after she was told and told and told.
I think her generation regulary gave a bottle stuffed with baby rice ect and she thought it would give me more time in between feeds if she put more formula in the bottle. (it didn't)
Maybe thats what made him have such a Kevin the teenage attitude. LOL
