DVD Recorder?

I am thinking about buying a DVD Recorder, at least I think that is what it is called, whereby I can record TV programmes directly onto the hard drive, eliminating the need for disks or tapes. Can anyone give me any advice or recommend one? Thanks.

A DVD recorder IS a DVD recorder, not what you describe. What you are describing is a hard drive recorder, which is just basically what you have in a PC connected to a tuner.

I don't have one of them, but I do have TV on my PC, and a 2 hour film takes up 2 - 3 GB. With mine I can save to a disc, but if you just get a hard drive recorder, you can't unless it is a DVD recorder too, which some are.

I have a hard disk dvd recorder.

It has an 8ogb hard disk that records over 100 hours of tv. You can pause live tv ,and watch one recording while recording a programme.

It also plays dvds and I can download recordings from the hard drive to dvd r or dvd rw if I want to archive them or watch them on another dvd recorder.

It all depends on how much you want to pay. You can get them with dual tuners so they can record two different programmes at the same time, the size of the hard drive varies enormously as does the price.

Before spending any money do your research and get as much info as you can.

Chappie - mine is a Philips HDRW 720.

I've had it for 18 months or so and am very impressed.

It records on to the hard drive in real time, but only takes 5 minutes or so to burn on to a disk if I want to. I can of course edit recordings first to cut adverts and so on out.

It took some getting you - but as ever it's easy once you know how. I believe the more recent models are even better than mine.

I also have a cheap and cheerful dvd player/video recorder combi hooked up to it, so I have been able to back up some of my old vhs video tapes. (This does not work if the tapes are copy-protected, obviously).

But I would say that the hard drive recorder is the brilliant!
