What type of DVD should I use if I am wanting to burn some of my edited footage to disc?

It depends on your dvd recorder. :)

I'll be using a mac computer to burn the disc but i don't know what will be used to play it back, its getting sent away to be watched by somebody else
It is the recorder, not the player, that is important.

Read your manual - it should tell you. If you don't use a rw, remember to finalise it or it will not play in most other players.
I've always had the most luck with DVD-R discs for video in computers, DVD recorders, DVD players and games consoles, but it will depend on both the recorder and the player. Remember to finalise it like Ethel said.
always use a DVD-R and not a DVD+R. -R is recognised by more players than +R, very much like VHS and Betamax. DVR-RW allows you to right and erase, whereas DVD-R allows you to write once only.
