Gmail

In answer to a question about an alternative to Hotmail, someone suggested I try Gmail. I tried and found a problem. One can be invited by someone already on Gmail, or one can register using ones mobile phone, but only if one lives in Australasia, the far east, Turkey (why Turkey for goodness sake??), or USA. I neither know a current user nor live in any of the aforementioned places. I am up against a brick wall! Any suggestions?
