Internet connection stops responding after about 30 mins...

For no apparent reason my internet connection (adsl broadband) will just stop working (usually after about 30 mins though sometimes it works perfectly.)

The way that I have been fixing it is to unpulg the power to the modem and then re-connect it. After about 30 secs all the modem's lights reappear and I can continue surfing.

My question is two-fold:

1.Can I stop this from happening in the first place?

2.Is there a way to fix the problem once it has occured that does not involve the whole plug/unplug scenario.

Ps. I should mention that my flatmate has recently installed a wireless router so that she can use the internet on the computer in her room (wirelessly of course.) Might this have something to do with it? The problem occurs whether she is using the internet concurrently or not.

so you have a modem connected to the wireless router, which is connected with a cable to your computer, and wirelessly to your flatmate's?

or does she have her own wireless modem+router, in addition to the modem you use to connect?

Good point - I just checked and it seems that my computer is connected to the wireless router which is then connected to the adsl modem.

Pss. When the internet connection goes down, and if I am downloading something at the time, the download will continue regardless of the fact that I am unable to open or access any more web sites.

when you can't connect to the internet, can your flatmate not either? or is it always fine for them?

They are not able to connect either.

OK. On their computer they've probably installed a wireless client that sits on their taskbar in the bottom-right of their screens, and tells them how strong the wireless signal strength is. When it goes off, ask them if it still says they're connected.

Also, when it does go, have you tried going to the router settings (192.168.2.0 perhaps, or something like that, it'll be in the instructions), and seeing if you're connected there or not?

Finally, was it working OK until your flatmate installed the router, or have you always had this problem?
