Digital Camera claiming new batteries are empty!

Just bought a Canon Powershot A530. When I put the battereis in that came with the camera (Panasonic) it immediately flashed up the low battery warning symbol. Got about 50 photos out of it before the batteries packed in all together though. However, just put in two fully charged UNirROSS rechargables and it said those were empty, and then tried two branc new duracells and the sale thing happened. Is this a fault with the camera or is there some kind of super battery I should be using? Actually just tried to switch it on with the Duracells in it and it's working now. Any explanations for this gladly received!!!

Simple really,

Three things could have happened, the camera batteries ran down before you got the camera or you did not charge the Uniross batteries properly or they were faulty.

you may not have a strong enough charger. there are different types. it should say on the charger box or the camera info whether they are compatible

the UNiRoss battereis are registering as full in other electrical items eg Discman. Camera info says both batteries I tried and compatible. Concerned that batteries (Sealed) with the brand new product (also sealed) showed this fault.

Digital cameras of this type require batteries at the higher end of the power output spectrum in order to operate correctly. I'm not sure if your aware but there are two very distinct type of rechargeable batteries, the standard (which I suspect your Uniross are), and the more powerful Ni-MH (HR-AA) type. They cost more but will do the trick.

What type are your uniross rechargeables? Should say something like "NiMH 2500mAh" on them

Batteries are NI-MH 1300mAh

1300's are fine but will need charging more often. If you buy new high capacity (2500 or similar), be aware that most lower cost chargers only charge the capacity fully, that they are supplied with. Simply put...If you got your 1300's with a charger it will probably have a timer in it. you will have to unplug and replug to trigger the charger for a second cycle so that your new double capacity batteries get a double charge from the timer.

Fast chargers on the other hand normally have a 'minus delta v' circuit which monitors the battery so they can cope with any capacity.

Your camera has come out since i was selling digital gear some cameras do have a setting in the menu for 'battery type'. have a look.

I would argue that the 1300 batteries you currently have won't cut it for the camera you have bought. At least if you want the camera to last a decent amount of time.

You want to get some more powerful ones, and as oakleyfamily says, perhaps a charger that's more capable of charging them:
