i have designed a brochure and inserted some staff photos that were originals from a photographer into an InDesign document. I have not reduced the size of these in photoshop, only removed the background and saved them. I placed these images into Indesign but the printers says they are of quite low quality. I checked their resolution and its 300 dpi - whats happened???????? Please help!

Did you keep a copy of the original scan/photo in your PC (before you removed the background) ?
Will be worth comparing the original source picture with your edited copy.
Perhaps you saved the edited image as a lower quality jpeg or resized the image, hence the loss of quality.

Check the file size of the original and your edited picture, if the edited pic is much smaller in KB there lies your problem.
