Computer only recognising slow speed USB.....?

I formatted my PC the other day and ever since then I've been getting an error message when I plug my external HDD in, saying...."HI-SPEED USB Device Plugged into NON HI-SPEED USB Hub"

I've checked that all drivers are installed and they are. I never had this problem before I formatted and now it slows my drive down so much that I can barely use it.

I've also checked BIOS settings and USB is enabled. Can anybody please tell me how to sort out this problem as I have many many files on my HDD that I need access to on a regular basis

Are you quite sure you have the latest USB drivers for your hardware ?

Worth a quick check in the Device Manager to check that USB2.0 Root Hub is listed under Universal Serial Bus Devices.

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager

BIOS usually gives a setting to enable USB and support legacy USB (versions previous to USB2.0). Just worth another quick check to ensure there's not a High Speed USB enable setting.

Well, I did have the latest drivers, but when I formatted my PC, I had to revert back to using XP service pack 1. I was using service pack 2, but couldn't find the CD so went back to the first one.

Ive checked Device Manager and it is showing a USB controller in the "Other Devices" section. It has a big yellow question mark next to it though with an exclamation mark too.

Would anyone happen to know a way of updating USB drivers without re-installing service pack 2? I really need to use my HDD but this is slowing it down to the point where it takes about an hour to copy a 700mb file from HDD to C:/ and vice-versa.

Go into device manager and uninstall/remove/delete all usb devices then restart windows and let it find them again - might work.

Also, do the windows updates over the net, this should bring you up to SP2.

You can order a nice shiny XP SP2 CD from Microsoft for nowt you know !

If I owned the original copy of my XP SP1 CD I would get a replacement, but it's actually my dads disc and it's already registered in his name. At the moment Im having to re-format my PC every 30 days so I don't have to activate.

Also, I have tried uninstallin it then restarting my PC but no luck with that either....

I don't run XP but needed an SP2 disc for work and just ordered it via the Internet. No key required and totally free.

PC World did have copies available. Alternatively, use Windows update.
USB 2.0 will only work with SP2, simply having the correct drivers is not sufficient.
