How can i view somones desktop without them knowing via thier IP?

sorry but this sounds very "I don't know what a spanner is, how do i build a combustion engine?" - what do you mean by "view someones desktop"? If you're implying you wish to browse their computer without their knowledge (shares, passwords etc) then a) it would take much too long to explain it here b) i'm not sure i should tell you, but to be helpful i suggest you pick up some Microsoft Press books on networking/network security

It is possible to do this (most people don't install security updates) - but why do you want to do it - hacking is illegal!!!

The reason i need to is for security, We suspect someone is doing something illegal using their sytem and we need to be sure

If you suspect someone of illegal activities then report them to the police. Hacking is extremely illegal unless you have a licence do it.

Pickle, you obvivously think the grass is greener on the other side and we live in a perfect world. We dont. The police arnt intersted unless we can show somewrong doing.

But you can't lawfully prove that somebody is doing something illegal, by doing something that's illegal to prove it can you? It's not always imperative to know somebody's IP address to do what you're talking about by the way. Most IP address' nowadays are dynamic anyway - they change every 24 hours.

If you are genuinely spying for business reasons then this is not illegal but you'll need to tread carefully about how you do things - for starters you'll need to have formally warned employees of possible illegal activities, prior to doing any follow-up checks. Also i would recommend using proprietry software rather than "hacking" with software you write yourself.

What you use depends again on what you want to spy on, for example checking an employee's internet history can be done via a firewall logging system, monitoring an employee's application usage (i.e. running non-authorised applications, games etc...) can be monitored via various software applications - checkout altavista for more details (we use "Monactive Pro" here as an example of one)

Mobius1 i don't know what you're on about but i suggest you read up on DHCP if that's what you mean - IP addresses last for at lot more than 1 day, unless this is stipulated at the DHCP server, even then they are usually allocated the same address as long as it's not been previously allocated out to another machine

Sorry. I was reffering to somebody like a home user, as opposed to somebody on a business network. The question poster has mentioned nothing about business use. For instance, Blueyonder allocate a new IP roughly every 24 hours, but it can last up to a month. My IP address tends to change every 24 hours though.
