noisy neighbours

I live opposite a young Lithuanian family who party hard at their home all bloody weekend EVERY week. I have to work silly shifts and can't cope with the constant barage of bass from their very loud music system. They have many people coming and going at all hours shouting and revving their cars. Last night they had very loud bassy musivc on till 3am!!
I phoned the police to see if they can come round and tell them to shut up as I find walking into a garden full of people and complaining about their noise quite intimidating. The police say it's nothing to do with them!! What the hell do they do then?... thats not my question.
My question is, who is responsible for sorting them out and how do I get them involved?

They should have an emergency number for calls in out of hours times. If you can find out that number and ring them when the noise is going on they may be able to hear the music through your own telephone. They will take action. You can remain anonymous if you want to.

Thanks Ray, it's a private rental and I have complained to the landlord (as have most of the street I think) and nothing ever seems to happen. Apparently it's against the law to round up the boys and drag the family and friends kicking and screaming, at gun point out of the house and onto a plane back to Lithuania! Bet the police would be interested then!!!!
As Lithuania is in the EU they have as much right to be here as any of us.
The police should have given you the contact number for your local environmental health department. They will provide you with a diary type thing for you to complete and return so they can see how often it happens. Good luck!

poor you catchinit, we had this problem with some neighbours upstairs. There is a way to get round it but you have to make sure you do it the right way (ie retribution is not the way!!)..
1) Start your diary from tonight to include anything anti-social that they do. Inlcude times and how many people are involved but are importantly how they made you feel (anxious, threatened, angry etc)
2) Try talking to them in the daytime to appeal to their better nature. Explain how they make you feel and the difficulty of your shift work. Do this calmly and rationally. Tell them that this is a warning and you will have no choice but to contact the council if it continues.(at least give them a chance to amend their behaviours..)
3) If it carries on then contact the Noise Abatement Officer at the Council. They are available 24 hrs, just call the Council switchboard. Unfortuantely as stated above the Police won't have anything to do with it anymore. The council should send someone round within the hour (apparently?). They will ask you what you have done about it already and you can say you have your diary and you've spoken to them about it. They have a little machine that measures how loud any music is and they also note any anti-social behaviour. They'll take it from there...
If you haven't already, try your Council's website. Mine had some invaluable info on what to do and all of the contact telephone numbers.
Really the very best of luck and please don't let it wear you down, it's them at fault not you. x
