You have to secure your wireless.

What make is your router? Some, such as linksys, have easy set up systems to make sure you are secure.
How do you know your neighbour is connecting through your wireless link ? Read the manual you can set it up to be reasonably secure.
Everyone down our street has recently been forced to encrypt because of a surfer... you may experience a slowing down of facilities. The reason everyone acted together so promptly around here was they guy who was parked up , told the police and other residents - on two seperate occasions- that he had dropped off a lady of the night and was whilling away the hours, until she neeeded to be taken 'home' . God only knows what he may have been downloading.
You can set varying degrees of security I think Mr Sense said he could choose a 12 or 24 digit security code.
Nobody should be 'forced' to encrypt.

Security is the first thing that should be attended to when going on-line wirelessly.

Don't forget that anyone piggy backing on your connection can do anything illegal and it will not be traced to them - it will be traced back to YOU.

So as well as the minor irritation of losing speed there could be very serious consequences.
And how exactly would you prove that it was not you trawling the child porn sites but some unknown person who happened to be sitting outside your house?

And anybody clever enough may be able to access your files and hack your security.

Alarmist? For the sake of 10 minutes to secure your network, why not?
Ethel that is exactly why I knocked door to door to alert all the hot spot people that they were at risk. I live in a cosy commuter belt town and I think people just think stuff like that does not happen in places like this!!!!!!! We were quick of the mark because of hubbies job ... others were just lazy or felt they did not have the skills to do it.
Sorry, sense4all, I thought you meant you had not bothered until the incident.

:) Good for you for alerting your neighbours. My neighbour's connection is wide open but when I told him he told me to mind my own business!
That was a bit out of order Ethel. I would consider trying to be helpful to a neighbour a natural thing to do. Oh well,he'll probably need you before you need him. Just hope you mind your own business if a delivery firm wishes to leave something for him and he isn't in
Punch his lights out--if that doesnt work -- break his fingers
The answer to everything----violence!
hallj1--it WAS meant as a joke.....DOH
Remember not only to encrypt your wireless signal but also change your Router log-in password to prevent it being hi-jacked. Most makers default log-ins are similar.
