I can't honestly say I KNOW, but you'd be well advised to download any and all of the pug-ins available.
If windows NT or 2k or XP then check the task manager to see if it's screwing the CPU (in which case your hardware needs upgrading - memory is the likely cause, or possibly a slow/old CPU).

Also, when you say playback, are you talking about music which you've copied from a CD? if yes then this happens to me too and is down to Version9 being very new - it's only been released a few months so don't expect it to work properly for a long while yet - keep checking for upgrades, plugins etc.. (as i am resigned to doing!)
...oh and if it IS copied music - try cleaning the CD you're copying, then copy again
Yes, I hate Mplayer 9 too. Can't even uninstall it and go back to 7. Worst update I ever accepted. :-( got to wait for upgrade or something..
I'm sure this has come up before but I too hated WMP9 and so did a clean install of my OS to get back to v7. A bit of a pain but I had other programs I wanted to obliterate as well. Two hours well spent..........
