I want to be able to record a short section from a song I have downloaded from CD onto Windows Media Player using Sound Recorder.
However, every time I try, nothing is being recorded and I can't think why. Any suggestions?

Yep - Same situation occurs. It's not accepting any sound at all

Why not download Audacity (it's free), rip the CD to MP3 and edit it with Audacity?

If the media is already on Windows Media Player, it may be on the computer. If you're trying to make a file that's just a short section of the whole song, as suggested, I would download Audacity and edit the file to the section you want.

I like LeMarchand's answer, that's probably what I'd do.

But to answer your question, try this:
Double-click the speaker icon in the taskbar. Click the Options menu and choose Properties. Check the button beside Recording, then click OK.

Up the volume on the faders that appear and put a tick in the Select box under the source you want to use to record from, probably CD Digital or CD Audio. You can only have one recording source selected at a time. If this works, you can use Sound Recorder to record your clip.
