Yea, it's a bit of a funny thing. It installs a trial version for you, and after xx days it tells you the trial has run out and you can either continue to use it for free with basic functions or pay for the more advanced functions.
The more advanced functions will not be useful to the vast majority of home users (I certainly don't need them), and so the free version suffices.
As for the update thing, I've had the same problem. It takes ages and ages it seems. I don't know why. Perhaps they only have one server issuing the updates and it's blocked up by the number of people trying to download the latest version?
