Local to me is a stretch of Dual Carriageway leading from Junction 26 ( M1) past the IKEA superstore.
For about a mile its a 40 ( up hill ) then grudgingly 50. No one EVER abides by these as they are frankly ludicrous for the road. I try to maintain a legal speed and get flashed , abused and shouted at.
Are there stretches of road where AB readers feel that the limit is too slow?
Motorway speed limits are too low. Each lane should be limited differently. 70mph for the inside lane and each lane going to the outside has an extra 10mph more than the one before. A four lane motorway would be 100mph limit on its outside lane.
Exactly the same. They drive behind you to find out what speed you're doing. Or a speed camera knows what lane you're in anyway so that'd work. A member of this country's wonderful filth holding a camera can see what lane you're in, but he'd probably be too dumb to know what lane was what speed.
If everyone routinely ignores the limits, airbolt, why hasn't it got cameras yet? Seems a perfect site for them.
Secondly, I think the highways authorities should have to properly justify reducing limits from the national standards. Have some evidence to show why it should be done. Published evidence. Too many of these 'odd' limits just appear and no one seems to know of any good reason.
they're not allowed to put cameras in just because people are speeding.
There have to have been a number of serious accidents in the previous 3 years to warrant a camera. Hence them being called safety cameras - not speed cameras
Where I live in Bournemouth there is a dual carraigway right through the town. Until a couple of years ago it was the normal 70 limit but a couple of cyclists where killed so they dropped it to 50. Are they any less dead if they get hit at 50 I think not. So now our "bypass" is a joke with people crawling through. There are cameras so perhaps the cyclist bit was just a ruse, how cynical of me!
I see and towing vehcles in the hard shoulder and lorries restricted to 56 can drive up the gras verge with broken down and emergencies way up the grass bank!!!!!
I must agree with your thoughts regarding some speed limits don't appear to be appropriate for the road condition but can't see the logic in the idea of different speed limits for each lane as this would just encourage more bad driving. When I passed my test I was advised that the right hand lane was for overtaking only.
