installing updates

My computer says (installing updates 1of 1 Do not switch off .Your computer will switch off automatically)How long does this take as it still hadnt switched off after 30 minutes and I had to switch off as I had to go out. Thanks for any replies checking before it comes up again.

have had the updates before but didnt take as long as this . i have windows xp

I have had this problem many times - and been forced to switch off while the updating was apparently still going after half an hour or more.

And every time I switch back on, it whizzes through the updates in a very short time.

Don't know why it happens though.

Yes Ethel thanks that is exactly what is happening.So at least I know it not only happens to me

to in a pickle thanks yes i am on broadband and some take just a few minutes but these seem to be taking forever must just be as ethel says just one of these things.
