I have about 20gbs of music on my PC, but only use a 4gb ipod. The time I spend having to 'drag and drop' each song I want simply because I can't check (or uncheck) from the library is ridiculous. Sorry I'm not being helpful, but if you find out I'd like to know as well.
itunes is a mind numbingly poor piece of software as far as intuitive use and interfacing is concerned.
Hope you find out a a way to do it.

Foxnix, transferring 4gbs of songs from, say a 20gb itunes library (as in my own case, and I suspect similar to mkjuk, and many other users) involves 'dragging and dropping' EVERY single track individually into your ipod (as obviously 20gbs will not fit on to a 4gb ipod).
This is a tedious ,unnecessary, and time consuming process.
In normal circumstances, because the default setting on itunes requires that all tracks are ticked, all you would have to do is just drag and drop the entire 'library', (one quick and simple step, instead of several hundred).
The obvious thing to do in 'our' circumstances would be to uncheck everything in the library, then a simple mouse click against the tracks you want, followed by the same 'drag and drop' process. However, for some mystifying reason, no one thought to make this available, instead (at least up to this version of itunes) it requires several hours of mind-numbing patience and an accurate mouse technique.
Illogical.
