Transfer files over internet

Hi all - i want to transfer some large files across the net to the missus who is away. What is the best way of us doing this? I will just have her IP address, and shell have mine. We tried MSN but didnt get on with it. Ideally with a way of resuming the upload/download should on of the systems crash. I saw something called smartFTP http://www.smartftp.com/ but we dont have a server! Please help!!!

How large is each file?

1 is just under 1Gb, and the other is 100Mb.
