Tom Tom Problems

I purchased tom tom sat nav in Oct 2004. I am paying by installments however recently the sat nav is not holding any power when i charge it. When i charge it, it says its fully charged but when you remove the power supply it goes dead and shuts off. I called Tom Tom and they said i would have to pay �130 to get it repaired as the warrenty ran out after a year. Should it be covered until all installments are paid? any help would be much appreciated.
