IP Address on speedtest
4 Answers
I often use www.ookla.com to run a Braodband Speedtest, but today I am a little confused. When I run the test, it shows my IP address, and for the past 6 weeks the address has remained the same. When I ran the test a short while ago. my ip address was completely different. Also, the website gives you a history of how many tests you have run. What is weird is that it shows that the test has been run on my ip address several times already today behginning at 1.30 this morning, when if fact I have only just run the test for the first time today.I do not recognise any of the previous test, and they were definately not run by me.Is it possible for two computers to have the same ip address?Does this mean someone is stealing my broadband? I have an NTL 10MB cable connection, and I connect through my wireless router, but it is WEP Secured.

According to my router my IP address is 213.105.x.x but if I go to http://www.dnsstuff.com/ it says that it is 62.252.x.x which is a router address in Luton. So to answer your question, yes you do share IP addresses on the internet and no, nobody is stealing your bandwidth.
Apart from any proxy issues, NTL do not supply static IP addresses to their home customers.
Your cable modem would have been allocated a dynamic IP address when first connected with a time limited 'lease'. The lease may be for a matter of days, weeks or even years but when this lease expires, or you power down the cable modem for an appreciable amount of time, you are allocated another dynamic IP address.
