distance determination software

Does anyone know of a software application which measures distances of routes - not car journeys - but more for hillwalking i.e. perhaps where you plot the route by drawing with the mouse on a map image, and it calculates the distance?

I also know that there is a small gadget that you can buy that you run accross a map and it tells you the distance. You enter the map scale and it works it all out.

I afraid that I don't know where to buy them though - have seen them in those gadget magazines that come free with the Sunday paper magazines.

I know about these - in fact i have one - not easy to run it over a screen though, for electronic maps, hence the question, but thanks anyway
