VHS -to- DVD HDD recorder -to- DVD-R -to- imovie????

Last night I managed to connect my VHS to my Pioneer HDD dvd recorder and saved a short film 10mins to the hard drive so I had a good hard copy- I saved it at the best quality setting (XP). I then saved it to disk at (XP) quality and asked for it to be 'finalised' - i don't know if this is some type of formatting. I can now run the film in my dvd recorder, my desktop (window xp) and laptop (mac).

But I want to edit it using my imovie software and it will not let me drag it into imovie or even save it to my laptop or desktop from the disk why is this? And how can I solve this?

This reminds me of the story of when a driver asks a country yokel directions, the yokel replies 'I wouldn't start from here if I were you'.

If you don't mind my saying so I think you're going about it the wrong way. I'd record it to the computer using a capture card (they're not very expensive these days) then you'd have something to edit using the various computer editing suites, then burn it to a DVD.

Whether you can retrieve the file from the hard drive of the dvd recorder, I don't know, but this, if possible, would be an alternative and you wouldn't have to pass it through a capture card; simply transfer the file to the comp and edit it.

Thanks you your help..although all this talk about a capture card is all over my head - I 've never even heard of one lol!

I have tried to attach the laptop to the recorder but I dont seem to have the right cables, if this might work then I will continue to try and find the cable.

As I do not know what a capture card is or what it does it would have to be fairly basic to use and cheap - as this will not be used often.

If I read your query correctly haven't you already saved the file to your computer? If so, how you edit it depends on what sort of file it is. Perhaps you could come back on that. I think I could be more help if I were to give you email addy. I could then explain things in more detail. Please say if you'd like it.

Yes I have already saved it to disk, but to does not seem to want to save to the laptop or my desktop, I try to right click to get the option to save across to the folder of my choice, or try to drag it across neither work.

I would like further help on this as I want to try and edit it before Sept 11.
