Mixed up texts on nokia 6280

Why does my Nokia 6280 mix up my texts? When I go to read I sometimes find one text merged into an older one, then some gobbildy-gook at the end.
What is happening? It's not just my own phone either, my best friends sony erricsson can actually deletes the message on a newly received&opened text before she can even read it! (replacing it with an old text)
I'm aware that mobiles maybe condense texts, could this be causing it...?
