Help with wireless connection

We bought a new computer 2 months ago and also subscribed to BT Broadband, we received the BTHomehub and bought a Netgear adapter for the computer. Everying worked fine until I downloaded the antivirus software from the BT site. After several attempts of calling BT help (nightmare!) it has worked on and off. Sometimes you can't even see the wireless networks icon. I have uninstalled the netgear and reinstalled it. Also, I think we can connect to a neigbours line as I can see a Belkin listed on the wireless networks and have connected to it! but could not connect to the BThomehub?
The times it worked after the downloads I had to tick "let windows find the wireless network".
When I called BT help they said it was my computer - it's brand new!!
Any suggestions?
