In all previuos versions of Windows, it was possible to change the colour of the menus, highlight, active windows and other items. While you can still put the settings in under Control Panel, it has no effect on the standard windows colours. Any idea how this can be done? I like bright colours (like yellow with black text) for menus with a good contrast .

Right click on the desktop and choose Properties.

On the Desktop Properties window choose the Appearance tab. I think you can change these thing there.

Note the Themes tab also allows you to customise the desktop.
only silver and a really rubbish olive green as alternatives though. im sure if you google for an xp tweaking program you could get more colours
In the appearances tab, click the advanced button.
