How do I set my pc up so that when I switch it on it automatically connects to the internet.

Broadband, My pc used to connect automatically but it seems to have stopped now after downloading service pack 2

A router will do it - must be broadband though, but then, why bother with an instant dial up - it'll just waste time and money.

if you don't have a router, you could open the Network Connections from the Control Panel, and then drag the broadband connection icon to the Startup folder on the Start menu.
