PC not closing properly

Can anyone help. I attempt to close down using the Start menu. All seems well for a few seconds, then the machine just hangs, with a thin green bar along the top of the screen. I am running Windows 98 SE. any suggestions please?

Thank you Dunlop. I was hoping that changing my Operating system would perhaps be my last resort.

Sorry, can't help,but if you are thinking about upgrading to XP (will cost you a bit)!, make sue thet your machine is powerfull enough, also make sure you backup any thing you may need.

Thanks Steve. It seems like the time has come for a new machine, complete with XP, cheers anyway.
