"Switch User" is the equivalent of pressing (window button) + L, and leaves you logged on so you can quickly switch between profiles.
No, sorry, I understand all that! The problem I'm having is this... After I created the accounts (for my three daughters) I went on each one in turn just to make sure I'd done it right. When I went to leave each account I clicked "log off." This then brings up a box with two buttons, "switch user" and "log off." If I don't press any, the screen goes black and white and then just sits there. If I press "log off" the colour comes back then nothing happens. So the only way I can get off that screen is to click "change user." But, after clicking the change user button it goes back to the profiles screen and every user is still logged on and then I get a message warning that running many programmes at the same time slows down the computer. So if the computer was left on and everyone had been logged on, then everyone would stay logged on forever... It's driving me mad...!
I realise now you can't use my suggestion unless you join a domain (unlike Windows 2000). However, if you go to start-settings-control panel-user accounts-change the way users log on and off-then untick the welcome screen and fast user switching you will be presented with a username/password logon box when you log off.
