Is there anywhere on the net where I can use/download microsoft word, do some typing and then save onto disc, or is this impossible?

You have to buy it as part of the Microsoft Office or Works suite. You can download the free wordviewer but you cannot create/ammend documents with this. Try kazaa if you want it for free or buy Office 97 from Ebay (it is cheap). You can also use alternatives such as StarOffice which was Office compatible and free (not sure it still is). Also, if you subscribe to MSDN you can download it from their secure site.
StarOffice is no longer free, but OpenOffice is free, offers the same functionality, and runs on pretty much anything.
