if you haven't done this for a while it may be that it's just clogged up - or sometimes the volume is too small and XP will tell you that defragging is just not neccessary.
Use Disk Cleanup, reboot and try again.
You will nearly always get a report saying some files won't defrag - don't worry about.
As for it stopping during a run, try to ensure that all backgound programmes (not ones you are running, ones which run without you being aware of them) are shut down. Things like anti virus, etc. You can find these in the little tool bar, just shut them down, defrag, and start the PC again.
