I have a requirement to be able to playback my camcorder tapes through a digital projector, via my laptop. I realise that the NV-GS17 is the base model, and the manual seems to suggest it's not possible, but is there any way I can do this?

Well according to the spec. the camera has the following outputs:
1 x composite video/audio output
1 x S-Video output
1 x IEEE 1394 (FireWire/i.LINK)
1 x USB (Probably for stills only - it's not clear, but applies to most digital camcorders)

It's difficult to imagine what other outputs would be available on a higher range model. Can't you just connect it direct to the projector? To connect it to your laptop you would need either a firewire port or an analog capture device, both of which are obtainable. (your laptop may already have a firewire port, if it's fairly new and high spec).
