Does that mean you think if I buy a dvd writer with standard usb 2 it might plug into my usb 1 lap top port?

Yes that would work, it would just not work as fast, the only difference between USB 1 & 2 is the speed of data transfer as far as I'm aware.

I had assumed you had tried it and it DIDN'T work, but as I and others have said, if it's USB it will work whetever USB port you have, just that a USB 1 is slower.
