Contract phone>>
2 Answers
Am right in thinking you can't get a contract phone if your under 18? How do people get around this? For example have the phone companys worked out some kind of thing where it can be in your name etc? Can the money for line rental only go out of an over 18s account? I want to get one but parents are reluctant to have it in their name (old fashioned!) and although my sister would do it, she lives really far away so if it broke or anything i wouldn't be able to take it into the shop! Any help mucho appreciated- cheers!

In order to obtain a mobile phone contract, you need to be at least 18 years old. You must also pass a credit check. If you have a low credit rating, we may ask you to pay an initial deposit when purchasing your contract, which your service provider will refund to you after an initial period.
To purchase a contract in one of our stores, we need to verify your identity. We need one proof of signature, such as a debit card, credit card or passport, and one separate proof of address, such as a driving license or bank statement.
If you are in store, and have a chip and PIN enabled debit or credit card, the sales rep can accept this as both address and signature proof. However, you MUST know your PIN number and the billing address for the card must be identical to the billing address you have given for the phone contract.
If you purchase your mobile phone through our website or our direct sales team over the phone, a valid credit or debit card is sufficient.

You are right, anyone under the age of 18 in the UK cannot enter into a contract such as that of a mobile phone. In the same respect you cannot also have a contract in your name if you are under 18, so thats out of the window.
You can however, as I'm lead to believe have the money come out of your bank. This is mainly down to the fact most retailers do not check the details of the account holder when taking them, I'm not 100% sure on where the law sit's with this since you can set up a direct debit to most UK Current and Bank accounts.
Even if the money was coming from your account, any default or non-payment would go against the named person on the account, eg. your parents!!!!
